The importance of having a well designed logo
What is a logo?
A logo identifies a company or product via the use of a symbol or icon. A logo should not literally describe what the business does, but rather identify the business in a way that is recognisable and memorable.
It is also important to note that only after a logo becomes familiar, does it function the way it is intended to do much like how we much must learn people’s names to identify them.
The logo identifies a business or product in its simplest form.
Why does my business need one?
A logo can be the first representation of your business that potential customers see. It reflects the overall image you want your business to portray. A badly designed logo can make you look unprofessional or untrustworthy.
Having a well-designed logo is a way of building your brand identity so that it will eventually become so familiar that customers will recognise you from the logo alone (golden arches, double-tailed mermaid?), meaning that it is a powerful marketing tool.
What makes a good logo?
An effective logo is distinctive, appropriate, practical, graphic, simple in form and conveys an intended message. Think about the various ways you’re going to use your logo; it pays to keep it simple.
It’s likely to be used on different mediums, such as business stationery, clothing, product packaging, shop signage as well as online. Making sure that the text of your company name is clear and easy to read at a distance is a must.
You must be consistent on the use of your logo to ensure that it is as effective as possible.
Colours
Stick to a maximum of 3 main solid colours. Logos that have many or gradient colours, lots of fine detail or photographic content are much more likely to alter in colour on various mediums due to different printing technologies.
Red – Passion, aggression, strength, romance
Orange – Creativity, energy, fun
Yellow – Positivity, security, warmth
Green – Freshness, harmony, environmental
Blue – Calm, success, confidence
Purple – Ceremonious, mysterious, majestic
